It Was "Sew" Much Fun!

We had a busy weekend, and I love em' busy!

Some weekend highlights included:

1. Attending the Grand Opening for the New Chick-Fil-A in a neighboring town.

2. Pricing five of my old prom and Color's Days Dresses to sell at a local pageant.

3. Driving to Lake Sequioa for an alone "date" (Woot!)

4. Pampering my parents to a dinner and a movie on us at our house! So fun!

5. My mom giving me her wedding dress this weekend as a sentimental gift. It is gorgeous mom, and I will treausure it always! I love you, girl!

I like to stay on the go, and because my mom does too, we set up a sewing lesson for an afternoon at my house. I would consider myself a card maker,a painter, a scrapper, but not a sewer. It is not due to lack of "want-to", but rather a lack of instruction. I have always longed to sit at the sewing machine and create beautiful garments and curtains. This is probably because I come from a family of sewers. I want my children to be able to watch me hem their little pants- and not have to take them somewhere.

Mom accompanied me to Hancock Fabrics where I bought several yards of fun fabric and 47 burp cloths. I think we got carried away, to say the least! I figure if I use those to practice on, whenever we eventually start a family, I will have plenty of cute ones stored up. I love a good project- especially if it involves a good friend. My mom is definitely a good friend. The older I get, the more she becomes a girlfriend and less of a "mom." I love it! I still go to her for motherly advice, but more often than not, she seeks out my advice and opinions, as well. It is a great feeling to have that relationship with her. I greatly valued her sewing lesson-she was patient and kind. Even when I forgot how to load the bobbin. : )

My supplies..

How much fun are these!

My mom's antique Singer sewing machine. It is a beauty!

Me- sans makeup - heading upstairs to wash all the burp cloths.

Practicing...

Laying it out...

My mom, pinning down the ribbon...

Success!

I know, I know... it is nothing fancy or even that great, but it is a start.
And everyone has to start somewhere. : )

  1. That looks SO fun to me! We worked on pillow case dresses a couple of weeks ago and plan to do some burp clothes and aprons within the next couple of weeks. We (my friend Hannah and I) are definitely new at it and have lots of practice ahead!

  8. Looks great! I have taught myself to hem because my husband and I are both short! :) I also made my first set of curtains for our basement a few months ago. I would do more if I had the time!

  9. How Fun! I would love to learn how to sew but don't think I have the patience. In junior high, my grandma helped me sew a dress and I actually wore it to school-gee whiz-it was plaid like a picnic blanket with ants all over it-i don't know what i was thinking.

  19. you're so talented Jessica, I'm sure you'll pick it up in no time. But it's nice to have someone to show us the ropes, isn't it? My mother does the same thing for me whenever I have a sewing project I can't tackle alone.

  20. So cute and I absolutely love "Made By" tags! It's amazing how expensive those burp cloths can be in a boutique store. You could probably start a business selling those!

  22. Great Job Jess! I love all your fun fabrics and trims. Those make great gifts too for showers. :) I NEED some of those made by tags, but like all of the other personalized products out there, I'm sure they don't carry "MEREDITH" in stock. :(

You'll be making all kind of fun things now!

  25. What a wonderful place to start. You can never be too prepared for when babies might come along, anyway. Plus, they'd make cute gifts in the mean time! You're so crafty!

I have my great-aunts sewing machine and it just sits in my closet. I can sew by hand, but I need lessons on the machine big time. (Mostly, I need confidence.)

  26. These are great!!! Very cute gifts! I need to try to make some of those. I love to sew but don't really have the time to do all the projects that I'd like to do. We moved a round table into the entry way after Christmas and it really really needs a nice table skirt...I was hoping to get to make one before hosting my daughter's first birthday party, but I'm not sure that's going to be possible (2/2)!? Did you special order the personalized tags--I love those!

  28. The burp clothes are so cute!! And it looks like great practice! I've just taken up sewing too! My grandma is an amazing sewer, and I used to sew all the time with her when I was little. We even made a quilt! But that was when I was 8, so I've kind of forgotten everything I learned.

Just recently, my mom has been showing me how to sew again. I've been making those "corn-bags" like crazy!! and I just made an Elvis blanket. haha! I forgot to post about it... I'll have to get on that!
