Port Sanilac Harbor {Lake Huron}

After spending the day before in downtown Detroit, we decided to head north to visit the Bavarian village of Frankenmuth.

Frankenmuth {Go ahead and sound it out.. it is fun to say!} was founded by German immigrants back in the late 1800's and is still a thriving European village today. Full of bratwursts, sour kraut, nutcrackers, and coo coo clocks, it is a place that made my family reminisce about the many years we lived in Nuremburg, Germany back in the 1980's {we moved to Germany when I was three and moved back to the states when I was seven.} Nestled in Michigan of all places, it is a very popular attraction.

We ate jaeger shnitzel, spaetzle, bratwursts, and stollen at the Bavarian Inn,

visited with a nice man who serenaded patrons in the restaurant,

and snapped lots of pictures in the breezy 73 degree weather.

Frankenmuth is beautifuly landscaped and architecturally drool worthy.

Part of the village includes an enormous Christmas store open year round that really put me in the mood for twinkling lights!

Afterwards, we headed east a few hours to Lake Huron and the picturesque Port Sanilac Harbor.

The Great Lakes remind me a lot of the Pacific northwest- cold water, rocky brown sugar sand, but here, we are graced with tall lighthouses. Bracing the white capped waves, they stand tall and lonley amidst an endless ocean of lake water as far as the eye can see.

As dusk approached, the setting sun cast everything a glow and Harbor {for the first time} put his piggies in the sand of the Great Lakes.

What a picture perfect day. Driving back home the two hours to Detroit, I am reminded again of why we named our son, Harbor. A place of safety, peace, and refuge from rough waters and storms... This day was just that!

{To answer the comment about the pearl necklace pictured in our sitting room, it is from the Salvation Army and completely vintage. I wish you luck finding one- thrift stores are the best for jewelry! Thanks for asking.}

I even brought home a few rocks from that beach,ha!!!And Harbor helped me put them in my rock garden after we got back home. Many wonderful memories on this trip. Going to that Germany town reminded me of the years we spent in Germany. Time has really passed so fast. We need to make plans to take Harbor & David to Germany someday to compare it.
