First Grade

And just like that- poof!- summer is over and gone!
It is just the beginning of a new era for our family, and to be truthful, it hurts.
This is Harbor's first year to be away from home all the livelong day.
And I know there will be no stopping it from here on out.
I'm in the minority of moms, I think, but I am the happiest when my kids are home.
When I taught back when Harbor was a tot, I really struggled to find joy and balance in my work/life.
I just always felt stretched thin.
Everything in me yearned for more time at home: time to cook, and play, and rock babies.
I know God has made us all different and planted seeds that flower different fruit in different seasons, and I'm so thankful for that!  Someday, I think God may call me again to teach, but I know the time isn't any time soon.
: )
Harbor had his first day of first grade today.
He was ready, but still a bit hesitant.
He had a magical year in kindergarten last year- he really excelled and grew and found the work interesting and fun.  It will be a hard year to top- and he knows it.
But he is excited about seeing old friends and making new.
We took our annual chalkboard pictures to document his favorites this go 'round.
Mommy confession:
I dressed him in his school uniform {he attends a classical academy with a uniform policy} and took these pictures on Sunday, three days before school actually started.
David played at the park with the little ones while I snapped away, and then Harbor changed clothes and joined them.
I just knew that the first day would be hectic and trying, and I wanted to make my load as light as possible.  Having these pictures done ahead of time helped us all have a much smoother morning.

He chose an L.L.Bean backpack this year and I have high hopes!
His Lillian Vernon from last year barely came across the finish line.
Praying this one lasts!

We spent one evening coming up with menu ideas for lunch and posting them on the 'fridge.
He was really excited about having a "real" school lunch since last year he only went half day.

I hung a few streamers and made a simple banner out of construction paper, and we surprised him in the morning.  It took five minutes to throw it up the night before, but Harbor's little face was the prize!

A sweet friend of mine drove over to my house at 7:00 a.m. to watch a sleeping Henry and crawling Hollin so that I could take Harbor alone and walk him in properly and really just be in the moment.

It was a total blessing to spend that time alone with Harbor.
I'm really glad I asked- and so thankful for her time to do that favor for me.

Harbor got right to work and colored away as the students trickled in.

After drop off, I met a few friends at Chick-Fil-A for a "Boo Hoo Brunch" as we all had first graders starting school today.

It was a special time to encourage one another.
We each have three children, so nine total between us, and when you get moms of that many littles together, it is always good for the soul!
{that is me in the polka dot top- always fun to be in pictures once in awhile!}

When dinner was finished, we sang "Happy First Grade to You" to the tune of "Happy Birthday" and ate  a vanilla cocoa puff inspired cake.
I baked it really quickly while he was in school and iced it right before dinner.

{I'm eating seconds thirds and blogging right now!}
: )

We love  how sweet and simple all the students looked today in their little uniforms.
It makes getting dressed SO easy in the morning.

And it also makes comparing pictures from year to year look like your child stepped into a time machine.

What a difference in 12 measly little months.
And right before my own eyes.
It is the reason I blog-
I'm so very thankful for the opportunity to preserve these thoughts in my head.

I designed some photo cards as gifts- one for last year's teacher, and of course, the new one this year.
We passed them out today.
Each print was only 34 cents, plus a candy bar.
Really affordable and so fun!

Who doesn't want a candy bar on the first day of school?!
: )

I attached the candy bars with double stick tape.

We had all the kids in bed by 8:30 p.m. tonight.
Though I'm sad to lose Harbor during the day, I know he is ready.
And little Henry is getting ready to start his home school experience with me.
I need to do some final tweaking in our schedule and really get a feel for how carpool and commute times will go first, but I'm just thrilled to get more one -on-one time with him,
Before too long, my Henry will be in school!
What a joy to get to do this a few more times with each child.
Hope all is well with you!
Cooler weather is heading to Colorado and we had some snow on the mountains just a few days ago.
Pumpkin everything is around the corner.

Our 2014 Christmas Card {among other things!}

We have been "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree!"
Lots going on!

For starters, Harbor just wrapped up his school year in their old building as they prepare to move the entire campus to a new facility over Christmas break.

He is feeling sad about never going to school again in the building he has come to love,
but excited to be the very first ever kindergarten class in the new building.

And here he is, wrapping up homework one afternoon.
Can I just tell you how excited I am to have him home for three long weeks!
Yippee!
I miss him a lot- and he is only half day.
Being gone all day for 1st grade might kill me dead.

Harbor and Hollin have such a special bond.
Since there are only 19 months in between Henry and Hollin,
Harbor is old enough to really be sweet and gentle with her.
I think he really appreciates having a baby in the house.

We've been trucking along with our book advent every night.
Sometimes we get behind and play catch up and sometimes David works really late and we skip it altogether, but we are trying our best.

And just for my memory's sake:
this is how it really really looks most nights.
Harbor reading, Henry flipping off furniture, and Hollin with her darting, cautious eyes,
taking it all in.

Real family life can be wild and silly and messy.
I love it and sure hope these kids grow up remembering the traditions.

Hollin, at three months, is rolling over both ways.
Gone are the days of leaving her on the changing table alone.
So fast.
SO FAST.
Where is my teeny tiny newborn?

Christmas cards have been made and are long gone.
I sent out about 250 cards this year.
One went as far east as New York city, one as far south as Amelia Island in Florida.
One flew to Malawi, Africa and one to Japan, at the base of Mt, Fuji.
The rest scattered everywhere in between.

Red card stock, red and white jute, cake doilies, a picture, and a newsletter:
I started this year right after Halloween because I knew procrastination would eat me alive if I delayed.
Thankfully, they were all finished soon after Thanksgiving.

I have done a billion color schemes in years past, but I really do love a traditional red, white, and green.

I always seem to work on my cards in the kitchen.
Every year, regardless of the state or the craft room I have,
I work late at night, alone, in the kitchen.
Standing, no less.
I just go into a trance like state, I think, and find a rhythm.
I find the whole process very soothing.

They got stuffed, stamped, and sent.
A little Christmas cheer!

I bought a beautiful hand crafted bracelet for myself from a friend who recently adopted her 5th child and was raising funds to help cover some expenses.
I adore it- and love a good cause!

We had a play date before school one day with a fellow classmate, his sister, and mom.
The boys had to play in their uniforms and we left and both drove our mini vans to class together.
Half day schedules can be tough, but I feel really good about the efforts I've made this year to stay social.
And we love having people over. So good for the soul!

The kids have been blessed with a few early Christmas gifts from friends here in Colorado.
This is so classic of pictures lately:
Harbor smiling because he tends to be very obedient when the camera comes out and Henry cheesing it up because he can! Ha!

Point in case.
Before I took this, Henry was just sitting, unsmiling, but when the camera came out,
BAM!
Lights! Camera! Cheese!

I love these boys.
Sigh.
My heart just cannot handle the cuteness of kids at Christmas.

And this girl?!
What did I ever do without her?
Of course we were destined for three children!
I mean seriously.
She is SO needed in our family.
A perfect little match.

Last night, we hosted a family dinner for 11 people.
A dear childhood friend of mine from Arkansas, who now lives in South Carolina called up the day before and said he was out this way on vacation and could he stop by.
Wow!
Those are the moments when you pray for the most generous spirit of hospitality, to welcome an old friend over after so many years.
Our kids met for the first time. I met his wife for the first time.
Truly a special night.
{Yes, Harbor is wearing Hollin's bow. And Henry is missing because he wasn't interested in sitting on the couch. Pick your battles, my friends. Ha!}

Harbor did take a picture of the grown-ups, plus Hollin, and I was very thankful.
I love the age he is at- so helpful!
{and our smiles here are on the verge of laughter- David I think was truly already laughing- because Harbor was all about taking 55 pictures and changing his angle and stance and position. I mean, really. Where does he learn this stuff?? Grin!!}

He had his Christmas party today at school, and I volunteered to bring a snack for the kids.
We had seen on Pinterest reindeer pudding with dark pudding cups,
but needed an idea for the vanilla pudding as well.
We decided to make both reindeer- and snowman pudding cups for the white.

They turned out so festive!

I used foam pop dots for the eyes to give them some dimension.

And added stick arms and antlers, too.

But funny story on Harbor:
he came home today with his pudding uneaten.
When I questioned him,
he said he didn't want to eat his reindeer because then he would have to throw him away in the trash can.

I guess sometimes things are just too pretty to eat.

Though...
I personally haven't met a sugar cookie I didn't like!
Ha!

One afternoon, during Henry's nap,
Harbor and I stung up pine cones and ornaments for our little front yard tree.

And on another day, my friend, Melissa, came over to teach me how to felt soap.
As if I need another addiction.

But seriously, y'all.
Her snowman soap is ah.ma.zing.

Now that I type all that we have been doing, on top of regular activities with Scouts and church,
I actually think we are busier than I previously thought.
Rockin' around the Christmas Tree, indeed!
But the best is yet to come!
Arkansas bound for the holidays in just a few days.
{and not a single bag packed yet!}
How about you, friends?
Staying busy?

Santa Baby

December is in full swing!
We are definitely feeling the holiday spirit with all we have had going on lately.
Love this busy time of year!
Hollin, at three months, had her first visit to see Santa!

Behind the scenes of my peaceful photo shoots, chaos is just always right out of the viewfinder.
: )

While I balance precariously on the edge of chairs, preening for the perfect shot,
Henry is keeping Hollin entertained with push ups and planks.
Love these silly monkeys of mine!

And yes, I'm fully aware that Hollin's bow is well.. big.
Ha!

I made it from a gift bow I bought at Hobby Lobby, and as a friend on Facebook told me,
"Hollin will have the strongest neck in Colorado with those bows!"
I love it!

As we say in the South, "The bigger the bow, the better the Mom!"
: )

I bought shirts and fabric and whipped up a couple Christmas shirts for the boys and added a ruffled collar to a little outfit Hollin already had.

They turned out really fun and Harbor especially liked the pom-pom ball for the Reindeer nose.

We donned our new shirts and headed out to have pictures made with Santa,
but not before taking a few at home.

These pictures are truly the calm before the storm, y'all.

Henry was not having it this year. Not one little bit.
He did no lap sitting whatsoever.
None.
He is a blur in the photos, escaping down the electronics aisle of Sam's Club.
#babyontherun!

Oh, he is a hot mess, but we love him so.

And thanks to Harbor, we even had a picture taken of the three of us!
{Thanks, Harbor!}
He is really getting quite adept to my Canon and has quite a steady hand.

We are doing our nightly book advent and really enjoying it!
{I have a link in the "Tutorial" tab up top on how we set it up each year}

Hollin has enjoyed many mid afternoon snoozes in front of the Christmas tree.
Pandora Christmas Jazz station playing, twinkling tree lights, sleeping babes...
The most wonderful time of the year!

And David recently attended his work Christmas party stag.
Poor Daddy.
When you live away from family, kid free events sometimes mean someone has to stay home.
We missed him, but we are so glad he went and had a great time.
He came home with Sonic drinks for all and a few Red box movies.

My Christmas cards have been mailed!
I made 250 this year, but only mailed about 230.
The rest were hand delivered.
They are always such a labor of love, a race against the clock, a challenge.
I totally feel like I'm in my zone making them.
{Cut card stock, breastfeed baby, punch holes for ribbon, breastfeed baby, attach newsletter, breastfeed baby, double stick tape photo, breastfeed baby...}

The year of the baby, as I like to call it, is always a good time around the holidays.
: )

We hope all is well at your house!
Hugs!
